Instructions for Authors

This journal uses ScholarOne Manuscripts (previously Manuscript Central) to peer review manuscript submissions. Please read the guide for ScholarOne authors before making a submission. Complete guidelines for preparing and submitting your manuscript to this journal are provided below.

Action Learning: Research and Practice publishes three types of contribution; Refereed Papers, Accounts of Practice and Book Reviews.

Refereed Papers - reviewed by at least two external referees and will normally be revised after receipt of their comments. These articles should seek to generate new insights and theory which illuminate the idea of action learning. Papers should be in the range of 5,000-6,000 words. An abstract of 100-200 words should accompany papers.

All prospective Refereed Papers should be submitted via the journal's ScholarOne Manuscripts site. Authors should first create an account, then submit their paper through the Author Centre. In order to ensure anonymous peer review, authors should remove any identifying information from their main text. This can then be uploaded as "Main Document." A title page, including author information, should be uploaded separately.

Accounts of Practice - Reviewed by the Editorial Board. These articles should express the concept of action learning by presenting examples of, and explaining how, action learning has led to the development of new perspectives and new ideas and how the practitioner has changed practice because of insights gained through collaborative learning.

An abstract of 100-200 words should accompany accounts of practice. For further information on preparing an account of practice, please see our Guidelines for Authors.

Accounts of Practice should be submitted via email to Professor David Coghlan at DCOGHLAN@tcd.ie and/or Dr Clare Rigg at clare.rigg@staff.ittralee.ie.

The Editorial Board will ensure that contributors receive feedback which is:

Timely - acknowledgement of contributions will include a date by which a response can be expected.
Supportive and challenging - to enable contributors to learn from the process and improve their practice.

Papers should be word-processed, double spaced with ample margins, and should bear the title of the article, name(s) of the author(s) and the address where the work was carried out. The full postal address of the author who will check proofs and receive correspondence and off-prints should also be included. All pages should be numbered.

Footnotes to the text should be avoided wherever this is reasonably possible.

Tables and captions to illustrations. Tables must be typed out on separate sheets and not included as part of the text. The captions to illustrations should be gathered together and also typed out on a separate sheet. Tables and figures should be numbered by Arabic numerals. The position of tables and figures should be indicated in the manuscript. Captions should include keys to symbols.

Figures. Please supply one set of artwork in a finished form, suitable for reproduction. Figures will not normally be redrawn by the publisher.

As an author, you are required to secure permission if you want to reproduce any figure, table, or extract from the text of another source. This applies to direct reproduction as well as "derivative reproduction" (where you have created a new figure or table which derives substantially from a copyrighted source). Citations of other work should be limited to those strictly necessary for the argument. Any quotations should be brief, and accompanied by precise references.

This journal requires a short paragraph of biographical details for all contributors.

Proofs will be sent to authors if there is sufficient time to do so. They should be corrected and returned to the Publisher within three days. Major alterations to the text cannot be accepted.
