Instructions for Authors

ScholarOne Manuscripts
This journal uses ScholarOne Manuscripts (previously Manuscript Central) to peer review manuscript submissions. Please read the guide for ScholarOne authors before making a submission. Complete guidelines for preparing and submitting your manuscript to this journal are provided below.

Instructions for Authors

Gender, Place and Culture considers all manuscripts on the strict condition that they have been submitted only to Gender, Place and Culture, and that they have not been published already, nor are they under consideration for publication or in press elsewhere. Authors who fail to adhere to this condition will be charged with all costs which Gender, Place and Culture incurs and their papers will not be published.

The Editors welcome submission of material for consideration as a main article, a short report, a commentary or a viewpoint.

Manuscript Submission:

Main articles should be broadly consistent with the aims of Gender, Place and Culture as expressed on the aims and scopes page, and be approximately 3000-9000 words in length. Viewpoints articles, articles that do not contain original research, but are critically engaging, should be less than 3000 words. Manuscripts should not presently be under review elsewhere. With your submission please ensure that you include a cover letter stating that your manuscript is not presently under consideration for publication elsewhere and that your manuscript contains original research.

Manuscripts should be submitted online at the Gender, Place and Culture ScholarOne Manuscripts site. New users should first create an account. Once a user is logged onto the site, submissions should be made via the Author Centre.

Authors should prepare and upload two versions of their manuscript. One should be a complete text, while in the second all document information identifying the author should be removed from files to allow them to be sent anonymously to referees. When uploading files authors will then be able to define the non-anonymous version as “File not for review.”

Manuscripts should be typed, double spaced, with ample margins and bear the title of the contribution. At the beginning of the manuscript, please include an abstract not exceeding 250 words, followed by five or six keywords. All pages should be numbered.

All the authors of a paper should include their full names, affiliations, postal addresses, telephone and fax numbers and email addresses on the cover page of the manuscript. One author should be identified as the Corresponding Author, who will check proofs and receive correspondence and offprints.

There should only be one corresponding author for the duration of the review process. Please make us aware if the corresponding author changes.

Articles which do not meet these requirements and/or do not correspond with the style and formatting guidelines that follow may be returned to the author for revision before they are considered.

Themed sections
Gender, Place and Culture welcomes proposals for themed sections.  Themed sections should contribute to Gender, Place and Culture in ways that cannot be achieved by other means:  while they need to have a clear focus, themed sections must also be more than a collection of individual articles within a particular issue.  Their focus must fall within the broad aims of the journal, but within this context, proposals that unsettle or challenge ideas and approaches associated with the journal are especially welcome. Further information

Figures
It is in the author's interest to provide the highest quality figure format possible. Please be sure that all imported scanned material is scanned at the appropriate resolution: 1200 dpi for line art, 600 dpi for grayscale and 300 dpi for colour.
  • Figures must be saved separate to text. Please do not embed figures in the paper file.
  • Files should be saved as one of the following formats: TIFF (tagged image file format), PostScript or EPS (encapsulated PostScript).
  • All figures must be numbered in the order in which they appear in the paper (e.g. figure 1, figure 2). In multi-part figures, each part should be labelled (e.g. figure 1(a), figure 1(b)).
  • Figure captions must be saved separately, as part of the file containing the complete text of the paper, and numbered correspondingly.
  • The filename for a graphic should be descriptive of the graphic, e.g. Figure1, Figure2a.
  • Tables and figures should be numbered with Arabic numerals. The approximate position of tables and figures should be indicated in the manuscript. Captions should include keys to symbols.
  • Figures that appear in black-and-white in the print edition of the Journal will appear in colour in the online edition, assuming colour originals are supplied.
  • Maps (with a scale) are accepted. Maps must have a scale, a key/legend and compass direction.
  • All figures should be counted when calculating total article length, either as 250 words (half a page) or 500 words (a full page).
Permissions
Authors are themselves responsible for obtaining permission to reproduce copyright material from other sources.  This applies to direct reproduction as well as "derivative reproduction" (where you have created a new figure or table which derives substantially from a copyrighted source). Further advice and information is available on our Author Services site at: http://journalauthors.tandf.co.uk/preparation/permission.asp
