Instructions for Authors

ScholarOne Manuscripts
This journal uses ScholarOne Manuscripts (previously Manuscript Central) to peer review manuscript submissions. Please read the guide for ScholarOne authors before making a submission. Complete guidelines for preparing and submitting your manuscript to this journal are provided below.

Health, Risk & Society welcomes original contributions from all parts of the world on the understanding that their contents have not previously been published nor submitted elsewhere for publication. It is a condition of acceptance that papers become the copyright of the publisher. Authors are themselves responsible for obtaining permission to reproduce copyright material from other sources.

All submissions should be made online at Health Risk & Society's ScholarOne Manuscripts site. New users should first create an account. Once a user is logged onto the site submissions should be made via the Author Centre.

Authors should prepare and upload two versions of their manuscript. One should be a complete text, while in the second all document information identifying the author should be removed from files to allow them to be sent anonymously to referees. When uploading files authors will then be able to define the non-anonymous version as "File not for review".

Papers should be double spaced throughout (including the references), with margins of at least 2.5 cm (1 inch).

The first page should include the title of the paper, first name, middle initial(s) and last name of the author(s), and for each author a short institutional address, and an abbreviated title (for running headlines within the article). At the bottom of the page give the full name and address (including telephone numbers and e-mail address if possible) of the author to whom all correspondence (including proofs) should be sent. The second page should repeat the title and contain an abstract of not more than 250 words. The third page should repeat the title as a heading to the main body of the text. Long articles may need subheadings within some sections to clarify their content. Foreign language words or phrases should be in italics with appropriate explanatory footnotes.

A typical article should not exceed 7,000 words, including the abstract, figures, tables and references. Authors can make a case for additional words up to 10,000.

Style guidelines

Description of the Journal's article styleQuick guide
Description of the Journal's reference style, Quick guide
Please use British spelling (e.g. colour, organise) and punctuation. Use single quotation marks with double within if needed.
If you have any questions about references or formatting your article, please contact authorqueries@tandf.co.uk (please mention the journal title in your email).

Word templates
Word templates are available for this journal. If you are not able to use the template via the links or if you have any other queries, please contact authortemplate@tandf.co.uk

Tables and figures should be completely understandable independent of the text. Tables must be typed on separate sheets and not included as part of the text. The captions to illustrations should be gathered together and typed on a separate sheet. Tables  and figures should be numbered by Arabic numerals. The approximate position of tables and figures should be indicated in the manuscript. Please supply clear copies of artwork for figures in a finished form suitable for reproduction. Figures will not normally be redrawn by the publisher. Photographs should be unmounted, high-contrast glossy prints, with as much contrast as the subject allows.

Proofs will be sent by fax or air mail to the author nominated for correspondence. Proofs are supplied for checking and making essential typographical corrections, not for general revision or alteration. Proofs must be returned within 72 hours of receipt. Neither the Editors nor the Publishers shall be responsible for any errors.

Free article access: Corresponding authors will receive free online access to their article through our website, Taylor & Francis Online, and a complimentary copy of the issue containing their article. Reprints of articles published in this journal can be purchased through Rightslink® when proofs are received. If you have any queries, please contact our reprints department at reprints@tandf.co.uk.
There are no page charges.

Ethical Policy
All authors should ensure that any ethical issues related to the study should be explored and satisfactorily dealt with in their submission or in a covering letter if additional explanation is required. The Journal accepts the ethical guidelines of the Social Research Association and expects authors to be aware of these guidelines and to discharge their obligations as outlined in the guidelines to society, to funders and employers, to colleagues and subjects involved in their research. Authors should read the SRA guidelines which are available here and will not be able to submit their article until they have indicated that they have done so. In the covering letter the author(s) should indicate that they followed the SRA guidelines. If they are unable to do so they should explain why they were not able to do so. The editor reserves the right to reject articles that are considered not to meet the ethical guidelines.

Copyright

It is a condition of publication that authors assign copyright or license the publication rights in their articles, including abstracts, to Taylor & Francis. This enables us to ensure full copyright protection and to disseminate the article, and of course the Journal, to the widest possible readership in print and electronic formats as appropriate. Authors retain many rights under the Taylor & Francis rights policies, which can be found at http://journalauthors.tandf.co.uk/preparation/copyright.asp. Authors are themselves responsible for obtaining permission to reproduce copyright material from other sources.
Exceptions are made for certain Governments' employees whose policies require that copyright cannot be transferred to other parties. We ask that a signed statement to this effect is submitted when returning proofs for accepted papers.

iOpenAccess

Authors whose manuscripts have been accepted for publication in Health, Risk & Society have the option to pay a one-off fee to make their article free to read online via the Health, Risk & Society website. Choosing this option also allows authors to post their article in an institutional or subject repository immediately upon publication.
