Instructions for Authors

ScholarOne Manuscripts
This journal uses ScholarOne Manuscripts (previously Manuscript Central) to peer review manuscript submissions. Please read the guide for ScholarOne authors before making a submission. Complete guidelines for preparing and submitting your manuscript to this journal are provided below.

Further information about the journal including links to the online sample copy and contents pages can be found on the journal homepage.

1. Submission. Submit online at: https://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/ape
The contents of the papers shall be the sole responsibility of the authors and publication shall not imply the concurrence of editors or publishers.

  • All submissions should preferably be in Word format
  • From January 2010 submissions to Applied Economics are subject to a submission fee of US$175 (one hundred and seventy five US dollars) to help defray editorial costs. The fees are payable via a credit card (Visa or MasterCard) at the time of submission and are not returnable in any circumstance.
  • All manuscripts shall be subject to an editorial pre-screening process to assess suitability for the journal
  • Subject to the pre-screening, manuscripts shall be processed in a single anonymous peer review system, using independent expert referees. It is the aim of the editorial office to confirm a first decision on submitted manuscripts in under six months where possible.
  • Final responsibility for the selection and acceptance of articles rests with the Editor
  • Submission of an article to the journal indicates formal acceptance by the author(s) of these peer review conditions and procedures

1a. Submission of supplementary material. The Journal encourages authors to supply datasets and other supplementary material during submission for posting online with an accepted paper, wherever possible.
Supplementary files can be uploaded during submission, using the drop down selection ‘datasets'. Please note: there is a file size limit of 10MB.

Datasets can be supplied in the following file formats: xls, csv, doc, pdf, txt or as a WinZip file. Spreadsheets should be converted to PDF if no interaction with the data is intended. A ReadMe file should be provided containing: configuration, installation or operating instructions as well as any contact information that may be relevant.

2. The manuscript. Manuscripts must be typed with a double spacing throughout, on one side of A4 paper only, with a 4cm left-hand margin. The text and references should be checked thoroughly for errors before submission. It is the responsibility of the author to ensure that the typescript is correct in style, syntax and spelling (Shorter Oxford English Dictionary). Papers should normally be divided into headed sections.

3. Title page. The first page of the typescript must contain: the full title; the affiliation and full address of all author(s); a running title of not more than 75 letters and spaces; an abstract of not more than 200 words; the name, full postal address and email of the author who will be responsible for correspondence and correcting of proofs.

4. Journal style. Please submit your article according to Journal Style.

Please note:
  • Authors are encouraged to provide subject keywords and JEL codes for submitted manuscripts
  • Authors should make their original source files (Word/LaTeX) available in addtion to the PDF version of their papers wherever possible to aid typesetting of the accepted manuscript.

5. Proofs. Proofs will be sent electronically to the 'corresponding' author for correction. These must be corrected and returned within 48 hours otherwise publication may be delayed. Alterations to proofs other than corrections of printer's errors may be charged to the authors.

6. Early Electronic Offprints: Corresponding authors can now receive their article by e-mail as a complete PDF. This allows the author to print up to 50 copies, free of charge, and disseminate them to colleagues. In many cases this facility will be available up to two weeks prior to publication. Or, alternatively, corresponding authors will receive the traditional 50 offprints. A copy of the journal will be sent by post to all corresponding authors after publication. Additional copies of the journal can be purchased at the author's preferential rate of £15.00/$25.00 per copy.

7. Copyright. Submission of a paper to Applied Economics will be taken to imply that is presents original unpublished work, not under consideration elsewhere. A copyright assignment form will be sent to the authors of accepted papers. This publishing agreement should be completed and returned to the editorial office. It is a condition of publication that authors assign copyright or license the publication rights in their articles, including abstracts, to Taylor & Francis. This enables us to ensure full copyright protection and to disseminate the article, and of course the Journal, to the widest possible readership in print and electronic formats as appropriate. Authors may, of course, use the article elsewhere after publication without prior permission from Taylor & Francis, provided that acknowledgement is given to the Journal as original source of publication, and that Taylor & Francis is notified so that our records show that its use is properly authorised. Authors retain a number of other rights under the Taylor & Francis rights policies documents. These policies are referred to at www.tandf.co.uk/journals/authorrights.pdf for full details. Authors are themselves responsible for obtaining permission to reproduce copyright material from other sources..

8. Permission to publish illustrations must be obtained by the author before submission and any acknowledgements should be included in the captions. As an author, you are required to secure permission if you want to reproduce any figure, table, or extract from the text of another source. This applies to direct reproduction as well as "derivative reproduction" (where you have created a new figure or table which derives substantially from a copyrighted source). For further information and FAQs, please see: http://journalauthors.tandf.co.uk/preparation/permission.asp

9. Disclaimer. Taylor & Francis makes every effort to ensure the accuracy of all the information (the “Content”) contained in its publications.
