Instructions for Authors

Reading & Writing Quarterly: Overcoming Learning Difficulties is a refereed journal; manuscripts are reviewed anonymously. The journal disseminates information to improve instruction for regular and special education students who have trouble learning to read and write. This interdisciplinary journal addresses the causes, diagnosis, prevention, evaluation, and remediation of reading and writing difficulties in regular and special education settings.
Submission of Manuscripts: All manuscripts submitted to Reading & Writing Quarterly must be prepared in accordance with the guidelines outlined in the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (6th ed.).

To submit a manuscript electronically, send the following two items as e-mail attachments (saved as .pdf, .doc., or .docx format) to Jerome J. Ammer, using the address ammer@sandiego.edu : (1) a cover letter indicating the manuscript has not been published, or is not currently being considered for publication, elsewhere; and (2) a blind version of the manuscript that includes all text, references, tables, figures etc. in one file.

Authors are required to sign an agreement for the transfer of copyright to the publisher. As an author, you are required to secure permission if you want to reproduce any figure, table, or extract from the text of another source. This applies to direct reproduction as well as ‘‘derivative reproduction'' (where you have created a new figure or table which derives substantially from a copyrighted source. All accepted manuscripts, artwork, and photographs become the property of the publisher.

Illustrations: Illustrations submitted (line drawings, halftones, photos, photomicrographs, etc.) should be clean originals or digital files. Digital files are recommended for highest quality reproduction and should follow these guidelines:
  • 300 dpi or higher
  • sized to fit on journal page
  • EPS, TIFF, or PSD format only
  • submitted as separate files, not embedded in text files
Color Reproduction: Color art will be reproduced in color in the online publication at no additional cost to the author. Color illustrations will also be considered for print publication; however, the author will be required to bear the full cost involved in color art reproduction. Please note that color reprints can only be ordered if print reproduction costs are paid. Print Rates: $900 for the first page of color; $450 per page for the next three pages of color. A custom quote will be provided for articles with more than four pages of color. Art not supplied at a minimum of 300 dpi will not be considered for print.
Tables and Figures: Tables and figures should not be embedded in the text, but should be included as separate sheets or files. A short descriptive title should appear above each table with a clear legend and any footnotes suitably identified below. All units must be included. Figures should be completely labeled, taking into account necessary size reduction. Captions should be typed, double-spaced, on a separate sheet.

Proofs: One set of page proofs is sent to the designated author. Proofs should be checked and returned within 48 hours.

Reprints: Each corresponding author will receive one copy of the issue in which the article appears. Reprints of individual articles are available for order at the time authors review page proofs. A discount on reprints is available to authors who order before print publication.
