Aims & Scope

The Teaching Artist Journal is a print quarterly (also available online) that serves as a voice, forum, and resource for teaching artists and all those working at the intersection of art and learning. Each issue includes a wide variety of writing about the most innovative and powerful work being done by teaching artists across the US and around the world. TAJ is a research initiative of the Office of Academic Research, Columbia College Chicago, and is published by Routledge/Taylor & Francis. More information about TAJ can be found at TAJournal.com.
 
TAJ encourages unconventional and novel approaches to writing about the practice and theory of teaching artistry, including narrative work, photo essays, graphic presentations, and experimental writing in the Practice, Research, Theory section and the Essays, Reflections, experiments section.

The mission of the Teaching Artist Journal:
  • To advance effective, innovative practice by teaching artists and to document such practice.
  • To serve as a vital, international forum, a practical and theoretical tool, and a point of connection for teaching artists of all kinds.
  • To advocate for the interests of teaching artists.
  • To forge new connections and new methods of communication among arts educators.
  • To share the artistic, educational and social insights gained by teaching artists with the broader fields of education and arts practice.
  • To advocate for access to work in the arts for all people.
Submission reuirements for the various sections of the Journal are as follows:
Practice, Research, Theory (feature articles)
  • 4000 words maximum length.
  • Work not previously published.
  • Practice, Research, Theory section articles are subject to peer review prior to acceptance.
  • Citations and references in MLA or APA style.
  • Electronic submissions in MS Word format - email to TAJournal@colum.edu.
Ideas/Reflections/Experiments
  • Opinion pieces, polemics, experimental and creative writings about the teaching artistry.
  • 2000 words maximum length.
Resource Exchange Section - book, Web, and other resource reviews:
